Once again, we found ourselves in the process of having our daughter, Carly, tested for a learning disability. Our school district did not make this process easy or help us to understand the laws. I began making phone calls, and someone told me I needed an advocate. I was referred to Jill Hrinda-Patten. At this point I was getting beaten down and was too emotionally attached. I didn't quite understand special education law and what was the next step. I felt that this time I wanted some answers about what was preventing our daughter from learning.
Jill has always guided me through the decision making processes when looking for evaluations from specialists. Jill has always been there to assist in advocating with me through meetings at our school district even on days when we have a bad northwestern Pennsylvania snowstorm. We are still in the process of working with the school to assure that our daughter’s rights are met regarding special education. Through the process, we did secure an independent evaluation that was partially paid for by the school district that states Carly does have a learning disability. Now she is getting the help she needs through private tutors. I feel this has been one of the greatest gifts in knowing what accommodations and learning strategies she needs to be successful. We have a direction to go, thanks to Jill Hrinda-Patten.
God Bless,
Karen King mother of Carly
